SPORE grant to investigate leiomyosarcoma

Our team David Thomas and Mandy Ballinger has received a collaborative grant through the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI)‘s Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE). Michigan Medicine was granted USD$12.3 million to facilitate an international partnership from major sarcoma centres to investigate leiomyosarcoma, a rare form of soft tissue sarcoma.

This grant allows a focus on the genetic epidemiology of cancer deposition syndromes such as Li-Fraumeni Syndrome, defining the risk for cancer in affected families as well as the general population by evaluating the largest-ever cohort of leiomyosarcoma patients.

We’re proud to be associated through the International Kindred Sarcoma Study – an Australian-led initiative investigating hereditary aspects of sarcoma.
